Census.. only the CENSUS

Ok, the other thread got taken over with health care talk. It is interesting and it will continue but I wanted a thread for Census questions and opinions.

I tried to fill this thing out this morning. For those of you who already completed it and mailed it back... how can you justify answering most of the questions on it?

I'm Ok with question #1 and #2

After that I just can't make myself put in anymore answers. Not because I'm some paranoid black helicopter guy but because these questions have nothing to do with the CENSUS. It is simply supposed to be a count of the US population to determine the correct number of representatives for Congress. At least that is what I thought it was for?

I worry that if I answer #1 and #2 only and mail it back then I will get put on some sort of list. My hope would be that the list would be VERY LONG because many people will not answer all of these ridiculous questions.

My understanding is you can be fined $100 but they almost never do it. So I think I should be fine if I just answer #1 and #2 and set aside $100 just in case.

Article 1 section 2 of the US Constitution. Seems pretty clear to me, am I missing something here?

Yes Nate you are missing the law. The constitution is not the law. If you don't agree with that, talk to the folks in prison on income tax evasion because their interpretation of the constitution said they didn't have to pay taxes. Just fill the damn form out, you need the 100 bucks more than the government.

Since you are the Goverments biggest fan please tell me why the questions (other than the first 2) are relevant?

Not trying to start a bickering war, just looking for an explanation as to why these questions are necessary or valid.

Examples:
#3 is this a house, apartment, etc? And, do you have a mortgage on it or pay Rent? WTF does that matter?

#4 what is my phone # ? Why, is it that hard to count the number in the box on question #1... what the hell else would you need to call and ask me?

#5 Fill in my name.... as if they don't already have my name connected to my address in the system... and again, is this Census related?

#6 Male or Female... is this relevant for a population count?

#7 My age? again, why?

#8 Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin? Wow! Really?

#9 Another race question... I guess for those of us who weren't Hispanic, Latino or Spanish.

#10 Does person #1 sometimes live or stay somewhere else..... I guess this one is OK.

Feel Free to enlighten me all knowing government cheerleaders Big Grin (all in good fun)

Remember, the census is not only to count the number of people. It is to get a feeling for the demographics of the country. Think about it, currently the white population is the majority and as such them minorities get some ahhem advantages. If the demographics of the census show that the white folks are not the majority that would a vehicle for some conservatives to get rid of said advantages.

And Neither can anyone else I've asked who has already filled it out and mailed it back. they just do whatever they are told and don't really think about the implications.

Pissed off People created this damn Country because of crap like they are pulling right now. If those people would have just been good little government obeying pawns then you might now be here today Paul.

If each generation just accepts more and more government regulation and intrusion then our country won't see it's 300th birthday as we know it. Look at the SHORT history of taxes (most are newer than 100 years) in the USA... after voting in the first taxes they haven't backed off the throttle one bit on adding more and more all the time.

Again, demographics. How many Americans rent, own etc. How many Americans own their own homes.

#4 what is my phone # ? Why, is it that hard to count the number in the box on question

Demographics again. Many homes do not have a land line. More and more people using their cell phones as primary numbers. For instance, if the trend is away from land lines, should the gov't invest in phone infrastructure.

#1... what the hell else would you need to call and ask me?

#5 Fill in my name.... as if they don't already have my name connected to my address in the system... and again, is this Census related?

This one I do agree with you. They need the peoples info not name.

#6 Male or Female... is this relevant for a population count?

Again demographics. For instance did you know that it is easier for a male to get a scholarship to college becasue they are the minorities now? This was told to me by my daughters career counselor at school.

#7 My age? again, why?

Demographics. If the population is getting older, medicare and social security will need more funding than if the trend were younger.

#8 Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin? Wow! Really?

See the above answer about minorities

#9 Another race question... I guess for those of us who weren't Hispanic, Latino or Spanish.

#10 Does person #1 sometimes live or stay somewhere else..... I guess this one is OK.

What about this one:

"Big Brother is Watching"

That book seemed totally crazy when it was written, but no so much today.

To put closure to this issue in my mind this is the conclusion I've come to:

It is very hard to fight against laws and regulations that are already in place. So the Census for 2010 "is what it is" and I will fill it out and send it in.

The best thing I can do with the anger brought about by things like this Census is to remember it when it is time to vote. It is hard to change what has already been done so maybe the best I/we can hope for is to change what we don't like in the future by voting and educating our friends and neighbors about the issues on future ballots.

Thanks Paul, no hard feelings. If you weren't on this board we wouldn't really have any opposition for arguments/discussions so I suppose that would make for some boring "internet time wasting"

I just hope my kid is able to grow up in a country that is at least as good as the one I was raised in. If not then it will be hard to explain to he/she why things used to be better and whey they changed for the worse.

Venting with a keyboard doesn't work very well for stress relief and anger management... I think that is what riding is for!

Even if I think you are right, I'll still give an opposing view. I think it's important that if you have an opinion, you consider other views and be able to defend yours. My daughter and I used to get into some great discussions, i would oppose anything she said. She once wrote a school paper talking about our discussions and how it made her a more open minded person and a better arguer becuse she would already have formulated a rebuttal to opposing views before the argument started.

Ok, now it is officially April 1st so you can tell them how many people are in your house.

I have a part time job driving truck hauling mail in from the post offices and it is funny how many people mailed back the Census like the day after they got them. True, it isn't hard to forecast the # of people in your house a few weeks ahead of time but I still find it funny that all the questions are based around April 1st and most have already sent it in.

Sorry Paul, I had to take one last stab because I still can't bring myself to answer anything but #1 without getting all kinds of fired up about it.

I'm with you Nathan...I'm only answering #1 and also putting down "human" as what race I am. If they want to send some little government worker to little old Dan's house they can...they might eventually get their damn form filled out all the way, but I'd at least like to get someone to answer why the government wants to know what race I am to my face...still not sure why that matters...what's next? What church do you go to? How much did you contribute to political campaigns last year? Are you a union member? Do you drive a vehicle that hurts the environment? Have you ever gone to a tea party rally? Do you like grape or strawberry jam when you make a PB and J? What is your favorite day of the week? Yikes, there I go again...

Done! I did all that my personal belief system would allow me to do.

#1 = no problem, this is the only legit question
#2 = No additional people

I gave them the Male/Female info but that is it. I wrote "Human Race" in the "other race" box for all the people in our house.

WAKE UP EVERYONE! DON'T LOOK AT THE GOVERNMENT AS YOUR ALL MIGHTY PROTECTOR AND PROVIDER AND THINK THEY ARE ONLY ACTING ON BEHALF OF YOUR BEST INTERESTS. IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY AND POWER, SOME OFFICIALS MAY CARE ABOUT YOU BUT MOST ONLY CARE ABOUT THEIR WALLET/CAMPAIGN FUND.
