Quietest CRF450 pipe

Ok, back to some Moto related discussion Mad

I want to find the quietest pipe I can for my 08 CRF450 because I want to start riding around my house. I've given up on building a track anytime soon but at least I could have a glorified trail with a few jumps and I want to keep the neighbors out of my hair so I need to be as quiet as I can.

Is it possible to bolt a CRF450X muffler on the 450R?

I was looking at microfiche trying to figure that out and I noticed that Honda sells a different end cap for the 450R. It is a stinger style rather than a cone and the description calls it a 98db cap. Is this just the EURO end cap that came stock on them in 08???

Not sure if the 98db cap would make enough change to bother messing with it. Do you guys think that any aftermarket pipe would be quieter than the 450X setup if I can fabricate it on the 450R (assuming it doesn't bolt up)?

Thanks!

The FMF Q is supposed to tone it down to 94db. I tried to fit one for Ted but his outlet was too big Big Grin Sorry couldn't resist

Nate pretty much all you have to do is fabricate a smaller inlet sleeve for the stocker.

FMF Q 4 Still has too much bark for the Hood.
Look into the European Arrow Brand.
Super quiet, Like 92 db

So by comparison is the stock 450X pipe less than 94dbs.... I'll have to see if I can find a spec but from the times I've heard an X in person they seem far quieter than any pipe on any MX bike I've heard.

Yeah I know Paul, but sometimes it is much more appealing to just bolt something up and go when "time is money". I'm also assuming I could pick up a stock 450X pipe for next to nothing.

Unfortunately as I have found out even if your bike is sitting in your garage with no gas in it there will always be one neighbor that will still complain that you have a dirtscoot.

I did a quick e-bay scan, not much there. Pro moto billet end cap is $143, ultra silent insert is $43.

Exactly, that is my fear! Even though when I bought my land I went around to my 3 bordering neighbors and told them that I was going to build an MX track on it.... and that was 2 years before I finished building my house and moved up here.

At the time they said "hey it is your land, you can do whatever you want with it". I fear that attitude could change when they hear what a 450 sounds like. I've ridden around to warm it up and change the oil but the sound of doing laps on any kind of "track" is much different.

In the end if I'm forced to get an electric MX bike in 2012 then I'm OK with that if it shuts them up and I can still ride.

Yeah at my pathetic rate of riding an average of once every 2 months or so I have plenty of time to look for one on Ebay. I know lots of 450X guys probably ditch the OEM pipe.

I'm sure it is very heavy but the real question is how quiet is it? And would it plug up the 450R so much that I would have to adjust jetting?

i think you would have to lean out for those X pipes but i do think you would be able to find one easy people are always pulling those off i have the pro moto end cap with a 96db insert and it really isnt that quiet i have not tried the ultra though the Q from fmf is pretty good. those power bombs really help quite a bike down too i saw a fmf 4.1 with a bomb on it pass at 96db but really 96 isnt really that quite.

Yeah.... not to sure about that one!

I used to ride with a guy back when I was a kid that had a KTM300 and rode with what looked like a section of a tire tube cut and hose clamped around the end of his silencer. It looked goofy but it did actually make the bike quieter.

I'm sure the 4-strokes would melt that but it is just an example of not worrying about what is "cool" and just using something that worked.

He was part of Joe Kopp's OG WFO crew.

That was my concern.... that 96 isn't really enough of a difference. All I can say is that the stock pipe must put out like 102db or something because my bike is loud. It does have 24 hours on the original packing.... that might be part of it but it has always seemed loud to me.

Yes it is true, 24 hours since Oct 07 and I don't even have a good injury story to go along with that... just life I guess!

The X muffler is a hollow can with screening throughout. No Packing!! What quiets it is the insert. Without it....it's one loud rattle can!! With the insert it's quiet, but it's choked! I mean choked!!! You want the quietest pipe. LeoVince!! FMF's are good too, but from what I know and read LeoVince "includes" a 94db insert and actually improves performance! Some is sacrificed with the insert. Even better is LeoVince designs their systems around stock jetting! ProCircuit has their new Ti-4R which is killin it too, but no sparkarrestor.....if you need it. Leo Vince and Yosh are like the two original aftermarket exhaust companies. Yoshi's can't be shut up though. I run Dr.D and it's not loud not quiet either. It gets real quiet with the silent insert, but power is choked hard!!!! just my .02

The X pipe has no packing you say..... hmm that appeals to my lazy side because I wouldn't ever have to worry about repacking it.

OK to straighten a few things out here....

Both my dad and I run the X pipe on our bikes. His bike is completely stock, and the X-pipe is completely stock. I run a K&N filter, FMF powerbomb header, and an X-pipe with the baffle cut off of the insert, Stock jetting. I run a 52T rear sprocket. My bike Literally sounds like an XR, but I holeshot A/B class at least 75% of the time and my bike does not have a problem keeping up with anybody. The Midrange is HUGE with my setup, its like riding in a Turbo diesel pick-up pulling a load out on the track. There is a bit of Top-end sacrifice, but I dont notice too much cause I dont scream my 450, I dont have to.

Im not going to use any other pipe, unless I build it myself. I bought the X-pipe off of ebay for like $75, it works great, and you cant even hear my bike in a race.

My dads bike is even quieter, but his doesnt have the power mine does... the baffle really restricts it.

I would almost be willing to bet that there is more average torque/hp in the RPM range you ride in with the X-pipe.

Justin,
So the X pipe was a direct bolt on for your dad's bike with his stock header? What year is his bike?

Also, was the X pipe a bolt on fit for your bike with the powerbomb header? I'm assuming the header was for a 450R and not a 450X? What year is your bike?

What RPM range are you referring to with the statement pasted below?
Does it really fall off after 2/3 throttle or so?

"I would almost be willing to bet that there is more average torque/hp in the RPM range you ride in with the X-pipe"

I don't take any offense to that statement as you are probably correct. I'm slow but I'm not "grandpa slow" so I still manage to have it wide open a least a few spots each lap.

Both bike are 06's and I dont think the 08's are any different.

The X-pipe was a direct bolt on for both the stock and powerbomb headers. The only issue is the subframe bolt is off by like a 1/4", I havent had any problem just leaving that bolt out.

It doesnt "really" fall off, its very subtle, but I dont notice it really.

I meant the RPM range statement as a general one for almost everybody, most people dont scream their 450's.

So did you just cut off the baffle flush with the inside surface of the end cap...... or just cut the "nose cone" part off the front tip of the baffle.

If I get one I might just try drilling a few holes in the nose cone of the baffle stinger to see if I can notice any changes in sound/power.
