Can my Obama-ride pull a bike?

I had to get a new (OLD) car last weekend that was a more appropriate fit with this Obama-nomics time we are living in. Actually I got it because I'm choosing to run my financial life by doing the exact opposite of what our wonderful government is doing.... paying off debt rather than "adding more debt to fix/stimulate the problem"

I will test my theory and see which works out better in a few years Smile Will I be better off by 2012 or will the government prove to have a better method.... oh man that makes me laugh just typing it Eek

Anyway, I'm swapping out my 05 Colorado Truck for my sweet new 1989 Geo Metro! Oh yeah, a Metro Big Grin

Has anyone ever seen a little Geo Metro type car pulling a single place aluminum bike trailer? For now I'm going to attempt to keep my bike and I would like to be able to haul it occasionally.

On a related note if anyone wants a little 4x4 truck that pulls 22mpg I will have an 05 Chevy Colorado for sale in a few weeks as soon as I finish getting my new ride mechanically sound.

Hi there, I know a Metro will pull it, but if you keep your foot in it those 3 cylinders will come apart, Maybe try a old Toyota Truck, Mine works great for 1 drive, 1 bike.

Yeah that is why I'm not sure if I want to try it or not... don't want to put any extra strain on the old 55hp 3-cylinder. The towing rig would barely have any more hp than the bike on the trailer.... but it has more torque and that is what counts, ha ha!

Might be better off to get another $500 rig for backup but just make the second one a truck so I have the ability to haul stuff.

My other idea was to make some sort of dolly to pull the bike with but I don't think it would be legal.... front tire sits on a platform and the rear tire rides on a 2 wheel dolly/buggy set up with tail lights/blinkers on it?? It wouldn't really be a trailer so I probably couldn't legally do it.

My thought process was this:

One driver (190 lbs)
CRF450 (240 lbs)
Trailer or dolly thing (150 lbs-ish)
Gear and tool box (100 lbs)

Total = 680 pounds of cargo.

680 divided by 4 would be equal to four 170 pound adults in the car.

I know, I'm a spaz... but I'm ok with it!

I have a 94 Geo Metro (3-cyl) with very low miles and I would not even think of hauling a bike w/ it. For one what minute street creed I have on the local MX scene would be GONE!!!

Two; the lil car barely maintains 25 and the speedo shutters going up a hill near my house with a 340 lb guy in the pass. seat that occassionally shows up here unannounced being he is going through some tough times and needs to hang with a "friend".

The car is GREAT for work commutes though Smile If you find a way to do it maybe we can hang at he races in our own lil Easy-Up Metro community Cool

I always heard similar stories about how slow these Metros were supposed to be but mine seems just fine to me.

Mine is a five speed..... I could see how the 3 speed automatic would be extremely slow but the 5 speed does fine. I ran up to 80mph on the way home from CDA to Spokane with mine when I got it.... and it seemed like it had more left in the tank.

unlike us mortals na palm earns moto-street-cred by going fast, he could show up with his bike in the back of a covered wagon pulled by a donkey with lipstick on and still maintain his moto-street-cred...

Wow.... I agree with the concept but I would have to lay down some serious practice laps before I could back up that statement at the moment!

I wouldn't value the opinion of anyone who assumed I was less of a motocrosser based on what I used to get myself and my bike to the riding spot.

Auzzi is always entertaining... although I'm not sure of his true identity!

I had an 86 Sprint, and I recall it put out 47hp, I had the auto traansmission, it didn't do to bad. I would think the newer fi model will pull the small trailer and bike pretty easy. I once saw an old Accord pulling a trailer with 2 snowmobiles up to Mt St Helens.

There is a guy i have seen at Hannegans MX last year with a geo type car who had his bike actaully mouted to the back sideways. The bike stuck out like a foot on either side.If i see him this year i will try and get a phone pic.

Ha Ha, you would just see a wheel sticking out in both side mirrors! I wonder what he did to the rear struts to support the extra weight.... I thought about trying one of those style carriers but I figured it would just bottom out the back of the car when you hang 300+ pounds off the back like that.

When I was in High School my dad and I built a bike trailer ourselves to pull behind a Corsica because that was the only thing we had to get to the races in Spokane with. We had to put stiffer springs and air shocks on the back of it to support the tongue weight. We just put a valve in the center of the bumper so you could adjust the air pressure for the shocks when needed.

I wonder if they make air assist struts.... if so I bet they don't for a Metro Big Grin I would probably be best to find an old POS truck and save myself some work but then I would have to make sure it is also reliable enough to get me from A to B.

Probably just spinning my wheels anyway and should just admit that I need to sell the bike as well Confused

How about some clues? Have we ever rode or raced together?

You do a very good job of keeping your online identity safe Big Grin I didn't race very many places other than Spokane due to always being broke so I'm guessing you were originally an eastern Washington or Idaho guy... or you came over from the Westside to the bigger races.

And if you say you watched me riding with any speed then you must be talking about the 2001-2004 time frame because it seems like I could count the number of times I've ridden since 05 on my fingers and toes Eek

Did I ever work with you or your kids when I was helping EW with one of his classes back in the day?

haha when you talk as much online smack as i do you have to conceal your identity!

I used to go to airway heights a bunch during the steve peters era and for the larger events after that. Had a few fun days at fossil bowl but other then that pretty much stayed central and western washington.

i always wanted to take the kids to one of the EW schools but unfortunately never was able to make it happen

Peters was running the track the first time I ever saw what an MX track was in 1996. I started late at age 16 in 1996 rocking a 12 year old 1984 YZ125 (a yellow YZ)... that is the same year I first met EW.

I think Peters kept running it through 1998 or something. I was only a Junior level rider thru mid 2001 though so I appreciate the compliments.

You are good because I still have no idea who you are.

I'm sure if he was seen at Hannegan he more than likely used "local engineering" and wedged chunks of 2X4's in there to help with the sag in the rear end.
