Hi All, if you've followed the Battle of the Braces thread, you'll know that my son broke his neck this week while practicing. It was pretty grim for a while there, but it is looking now like he will walk and be nearly 100% after rehabilitation. If you want the details, go to www.northwestmotocross.com/gws247.html
I am wondering if anyone has recovered from a really serious injury and continues to ride? Made the decision not to ride? Unable to ride? Anyway, I'd just like some input to either put his mind at ease, or let him know that there is life after MX... Thanks all, the MX family is awesome! Val two4seven |

First off...I'm glad that your boy is going to be alright! I have been through some tough times as well. I have broken my back and my upper jaw pretty bad in the past. In my opinion, if he's going to be 100%, let him get back in the saddle...but if there is a chance that the neck is not as tough as it was then there may need to be some alternative options. Things happen and the sport is dangerous. It's a tough call,, but life is short and it's hard to give up a dream if your worried about "What if's"

Afew years back we had ason racing the Nat.Am races and it seemed most races we went to had a tragedy! Had avery hard time with the fact I was responsible at least $$ wise for my sons injurys and his exposure to serious injury. I race and know if you don't want to get hurt racing STOP Riding. I had a long dad to dad talk with Gary Bailey and came away with the a perspective . If the rider wants to and is mature enough let him make the decision, then support that choice" . We have gone thru some serious injurys but am happy with the path we have taken. Not sure if this helps in your situation ? JR Enjoy Racing & Riding for Fun! Be a Good Sportsmen (or women)! |

Thank you. All the input is helpful. MX Fam you are right, there's this guilt thing because we support him in this. Others in the MX family understand it, but boy are we getting a load of crap from people who don't understand the addiction. "I can't believe you'd even CONSIDER letting him ride again!!!" and stuff like that... I just can't imagine an alternative for him. It's nice to have this outlet with people who understand. Thanks.

Val,
I'm so sorry this happened, I was wondering where you were yesterday at Port Angeles. Tell Joe we're thinking of him and praying for the absolute best. Karen |

Thank you, Karen. We'll see you around... Racing or not he wants to be where the action is.

I've been racing since 1969 and have had a few injuries none life threatening, I have had knee, shoulder, wrist and digit injuries. I have always desided to ride again.

Val, I'll be praying for Joe and your family.
God Bless |

I am very sorry to here of your little guy. That would be a very hard descision for me as a father to let my guy get back out there. The main thing that would persuade me is his confidence. If he feels that he feels scared in any way, I would say "no." But with everything, baby steps should be the rule after such injury.
By the way, did he have a Leatt on? I can't really tell from the picture on your Avatar, maybe a neck roll? If not, are you going to consider one? Sorry for so many questions, but I have a 3 year old about ready to make his 1st voyage this spring on a motorcycle and scares the hell out of me!! (But at the same time I can't wait to see him ride |

Hi Val, sorry to hear of Joe's injury, good to hear that it sounds like he'll have a full recovery. Another site you might want to check out is www.riderdown.org It's a great network of people (like here) and many people there have been in similar shoes.
I've read your post from the other site, good thing he had the Leatt on. We'll be sure to say Hi when we see you at a track. Like Joe, Cody has a passion for motorcross, although he can't ride, we are at the track too--we're probably going to head to Horn for the PRO opener just to watch and support all the friends in the sport. I have not had the displeasure of having my son have a neck or spinal injury, but he has broke both his arms, one of them he got compartment syndrome in spent 2 weeks in hospital and had to have skin grafting done (he was back racing 8 weeks later) and now he's out with a shattered tib/fib 3 plates and 14 screws....he's hoping to be racing again by the end of June--and I'll be there supporting him. I know what you mean by the poeple that aren't in the sport don't understand, and some try their darnest to be sure to make you feel like an idiot--I've had extended family do that frequently....I just tell them that I respect their opinions (although secretly I'd love to tell them where they could put them) but they don't understand and I don't expect them too. At least I'm not visiting my kid in juvi or wondering what help he needs for a drug problem.... Hang in there, let me know if you ever need to vent! Dawn Bristlin |

DawnB, That juvi part is EXACTLY what I feel!!! I just plan to keep him involved (riding or not), I can handle some broken bones, but a drug problem is a horrible thought!
See ya at the races! We're hoping to do PRO round 3 & 4. VetMX-- Yes he had the Leatt on. Read the story at www.northwestmotocross.com/gws247.html. I am going to go more in-depth about it in the next issue of our mag and on the website. The neurosurgeons have nothing but praise for the brace. We've shown it to them, because of course they had no idea what it was! Val two4seven |

I have only broken bones, cuncussions, collapsed a lung, but each time when i go to the hospital mt dad asks while im in pain and very uncompfortable if i want to race again. Everytime since i was 15 with two broken legs I have replied with a quick YES! It's almost a joke now but he still asks it, kind of giggling when he does because he knows the answer.
Sorry to hear about the Injuries 247- I think the leatt is the best thing to happen to MX. My doctors told me it saved my neck after my get off at pasco AX. It broke in about 6 different places but it did it's job. |

How bad were you hurt when your Leatt broke, that sounds like a nasty one. |

|

|
I was knocked out for a bit 30 seconds to a minute. I collapsed my right lung, and broke 3 or 4 ribs, they couldn't tell for sure because of old breaks and seperated my left shoulder. My spine was super sore were the leatt rests and my neck was real sore but both were fine. They kept me over night to make sure they didn't need to put a tube in my lung and drain it.

I agree with drew when he says the leatt has been one of the best things yet to happen to this sport. i had a pretty bad crash and was knocked out for a little over 5 minutes, and came out with only a broken wrist and concussion. i am confident the leatt saved me from worse

April issue of Dirt Rider Magazine in the letters section.... Chris Denison answers a readers question about the Leatt with some interesting comments:
"Assuming you want my entire honest opinion, here it is: I'm still not 100 percent sold on the Leatt brace. Yes, it was our product of the year (Dec. 07) and for sure it's great to see innovations in safety. But in the last few months, I've seen more busted collarbones than ever, heard of more and more riders who've been mildly injured by the brace's protruding back piece and noticed a lot of people wondering if it hasn't made it easier for a rider's head to slap the ground. Plus, I just cannot get comfortable in that thing. Time will tell if I'll become a believer, but I'm not there yet. Hope this helps. - Chris Denison" I thought that was an interesting reply for him to put in the Magazine.... I'm sure he opened himself up to lots of nasty letters from that one. The brace causing the rider's head to slap the ground is something I had never considered before I read that. I'm sure there are a few negatives about the brace but the added protection would be worth a few possible secondary injuries I would think. I have not had a chance to try one yet so who knows, but I thought you guys might find those comments interesting. Val, I'm glad to hear your son will be making a full recovery! I would say just to let him follow his heart when it comes time to decide about riding again. Also he can still have tons of fun just riding for fun even if he never signs up for a race again. Riding for fun has proven just as satisfying for me and much safer because of the more casual pace/attitude. |

Nathan, my son and I will be in Toes on March 8th for Waunch's 50 school. Look me up if you are there and you can try my Leatt. (#392 on a Kawy and a grey Dodge truck) Assuming we are pretty similar in size, you should just be able to slap it on and ride. I know I would have liked to try one first. Aaron |

Cool, thanks Aaron! That might just Justify another trip next weekend! IF I can make it tomorrow that is.....
I'm #184 on a damn Honda Blue Chevy Colorado truck. |
