FrownInjury Update. I tried riding on saturday night, but it wasn't to be. Before the second lap of practice was over I was hurting. I tried riding more but it was at half speed at best as I could not push it in the corners and especially the whoops. I went to a specialist that doc Bodnar from the Asterisk rig referred me to. He said I have a laberal tear in my shoulder, but he also said he would have me back by A2. I have been doing physical therapy everyday trying to get strong enough for next weekend. Here's hoping that the good doctor is right and I am back on the bike for A2.

Mad Hello everyone I am driving back to Lake Elsinore early and i thought i would update this thing. Well... where do i start. My shoulder is feeling better, I even got to practice twice this week before San Fran today. Last weekend in A2, my first ride back I didn't get to practice before the race, I didn't do very well qualifying 49th and i needed to be 40th. I don't like making exuses but I don't think taking a month off, with the exception of a few laps at A1, helped any. So like I said I rode twice and headed to San fran. My shoulder still bugs me, after riding and sleeping mostly. i felt good at SF, It was muddy and we only got one practice and i ran my practice bike so I wouldn't destroy my race bike. So I charged as hard as I could. I kept having traffic in my way but pushed on until the 5th lap or so.... as I was going through the whoops and my foot slipped off my worn out footpegs and I jammed my leg into the ground and POP! My knee went. I pulled over in agony and dissapointment as i knew It was not good. I layed on the side of the track for the rest of practice then to the Asterisk rig. No breaks in the leg but a very possible torn ACL according to Doc Bodnar. I will see how it feels in the next few days. I am very dissapointed and I apologize to all of my sponsors and fans cheering me on. The doc told me i could do a james stewart and try to ride in a few weeks or have surgery and wait 6 months. I am very dissapointed as I had many oppurtunities If I could have just finished the night. I guess on the bright side I managed to make the night show qualifying 28th(20 spots better than last weekend). Once again, I am very sorry to everyone.

Hold your head up bud, sometimes S**t happens. You're there living the dream most of us never had the chance to. My old man advice to you, having gone through the same thing 2 years ago, get it fixed now. Hit rehad now as fast as you can. Get the bad leg as strong as the good leg then get the surgery, After surgery rehab, twice as much and you will be back good as new. Buy a good stationary bike or road bike as it will be your best friend.

I will have to agree w/ Paul on this one. I am a 4 time ACL replacement person and all I will say is rehab, rehab and more rehab. Even if you think that they make you do the oddest or strangest things and wonder how it will help you do it anyways. I failed to do that and hence... 4 times. If you wait it out to fix it it will always feel unstable for you and you start to wonder if it will hold out and do what you need it to do. That's plays your head a bit. Good luck w/ whatever decision you make.

Confused I went to the doc today. had an MRI. ACL is garbage. Scheduled to have surgery on feb. 20th. I will be out for six months after the surgery.

Good news J, just six months. Good news because it means you'll be ready for summer and Top Gun. I got a Subway wait'n for ya at Teds/Garretts/Devols 2008 Top Gun event when you show. All you gotta do is find me in the crowd to claim it. You done good at A2 I watched online, speed was good and in only four laps. Real good. So for me it was great and all I gotta do now is stop that "MX-vs-ATV" LowMiller-556 (I think it's you) dude from whack'n me on my way to being a pro and I'll be happy. That and that #716 dude from whack'n me, in that stupid game, too. My advise...eat Subway sandwiches, play video games and do an occasional exercise bike. It’s winter and it’s cold and for me that means hibernation and shutting down. Bears do it I do it and maybe for the spring season you should too, cept for the video game and Subway thing of course.

I've never played MX vs ATV but it sounds like good therapy. Seriously Jerry, get a good therapist and start as soon as you can and as hard as you can take it. Watch out for pain in your calf before surgery and after. I'm sure the doc told you this but work the bad leg now as much as you can with bike riding, and squats. Your muscle will atrophy quickly without use and it takes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay long to get it back.

What is the repair going to be? Research says the best thing is your own patella tendon.

Here is a good message board on ACL stuff for when you are bored.

Ya I know Marnie, but the research says cadavers are not the best choice for sports operations, this is also what my orthopedic told me. I guess that's why they say doctors practice medicine, 'cuz no one knows for sure Wink

I went to Physical therapy. If I am going to have the surgery they said it's best to get it as strong as possible before hand so the rehab time will be much shorter. They will take 2 of the 5 hamstring tendons out of the same leg and graph them on to my knee. And no I was not wearing knee braces. I wore knee braces and swore by the things for years. Then i went to aren x and the dumb things kept catching on the shrouds of my bike and I couldn't get my leg down and i would lose races because of it. That and people kept telling me you shouldn't wear them unless you have knee problems because they tend to weakin' the knee. 6 of one things half a dozen of another. Like my dad says " You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. " I guess Byrne and Urqhart will be my PT budies at least for the next couple of weeks until I figure out what I am gonna do. Later Everyone

I had the same surgery twice (same knee). First was my own hami and the second a doner. If I had it to do over I would just use the donor.

I had to rehab the hami as well as the knee and it ultimately effected my foot extension / contraction for braking. Perhaps an isolated incident and it took 2 years to finally get better.

The argument is always that that your own hami will accept blood flow faster and therefore integrate into you body faster. No real hard evidence to prove this. If you are active and do the therapy you will generate the blood flow and integrate the donor. The donor was thicker as well because they can only take so much of the hami and the donor can be as thick as they want to make it.

Either way you will turn out ok its just that fundamentally I wish I had not robbed my hami to do the surgery.

Heal up and get back out there. We all feel you can make it on the big stage.

I had my ACL repaired also and took my hamstring legiments. I have torn my hamstring 2 different times since then, I think that hurts more then tearing the ACL. But I didn't keep up on the PT either. So lessoned learned there.

Jerry just like everyone else keeps saying get your leg strong and keep on the PT. If you do that you be ready before you know it.

Just in time for Top Gun!!!
